1930s, is a play that discusses and examines a very intricate and multifaceted topic; strikes. In this play there are many points of view which ultimately presents characters that are
neither black nor white in relationship to work and strikes and the need for stability in the workplace. The following paper examines and analyzes the complexity of some of the
characters in Odets play. Waiting for Lefty The entire topic of strikes, or striking, is not in itself a topic that is cut and dried, or black and
white. Odets characters illustrate this for while some may want to continue working and not be seen as a "red" or a communist, others may work because they do not
want to cause further problems. Still yet a worker may desire to work just because they truly need the money, even though they strongly disagree with the conditions of work
and wish they had the ability to strike, financially speaking. One such character is Joe. Joe is a man who clearly wants to strike, and it seems as though
those in the group assumed he would strike. He makes his case, however, illustrating that he was in the war, is not a communist, and yet clearly recognizes how they
have "been kicked around so long were black and blue from head to toes" (Odets 7). But, he offers the point that if anyone strikes they are considered "red" (Odets
7). But, to complicate the issue he indicates that they, almost all of them, are never sure where their next meal is coming from and "And thats why were talking
