an organization that has, as its mission the preservation of water in poverty-stricken villages. This organization is known as the Watershed Organisation Trust, or WOTR.
WOTR was founded by a Jesuit priest in 1993, under the idea that a shortfall of water was severely hampering impoverished villages1. The priest believed that if
villagers could regenerate their watersheds, they could trap the rainfall in the area and use it both for personal use and farming2.
WOTR has worked on behalf of villages across Maharashtra, and does so by working with a holistic vision - WOTR gets villagers committed to watershed development, convinces them of the
need for collective participation and teaches water conservation3. The belief of this organization is that giving handouts isnt the answer nor is telling those what is in their best interests
the right way to go. The best way to effect change is by pulling everyone together, providing alternatives, allowing them to pick the best choice, then working toward a successful
conclusion. WOTR also provides education for children, entrepreneurship opportunities for women, environmental preservation and creating self-sustaining villages4.
