in place. Why? "Its good business sense," wss the spouted line. What this slogan never seemed to explain, however, was why diversity in the workplace made such good business sense.
Now we know. In a global workforce in which people of all nationalities and languages are finding themselves working as colleagues and teammates
(even virtually), a diverse workforce is able to better adapt to changing environment, competition and customer requirements. A diverse workforce is better able to see more sides to a single
issue than a primarily homogenous one. Furthermore, much of the literature is fairly unanimous in pointing out that there is a direct correlation between a diverse workforce and job satisfaction.
Despite the obvious benefits, however, truly diverse workforces are relatively rare in the standard workplace. What is Workplace Diversity? One reason for
this is because not many people are truly familiar with what, diversity, actually is. Many times, when the term "workplace diversity" or "workforce diversity" is mentioned, the first thing that
comes to mind is "affirmative action." Along with affirmative action comes visions of quotas and dubious hiring practices to meet some kind of legal or corporate mandate.
Its true that the mid-20th century legislation that set "quotas" on the number of minorities to be hired for government positions did help open up
