up from his desk and treated him to a cold smile when he walked in. "Late again?" he asked. "Must have been a wild Sunday party." Ken wanted to retort
that actually hed spent most of late Sunday afternoon and early Sunday evening dreading the workweek. While he hadnt gotten sick - this time - his stomach had been clenched
in knots. The rest of the day only got worse for Ken. His boss never yelled at him - he wasnt
a yeller - but he constantly cut Ken down through humorous jibes. At one point, when Ken dropped a sheaf of papers, the boss turned to someone else and said
"Kens always all thumbs. We call him butterfingers around here because he cant seem to hold on to things." In the meeting, whenever Ken would stutter over a sentence, the
boss chided him, "whats the matter, cat got your tongue or is your brain all tangled up?" After a day with the constant jibes, Ken was stressed out and on
edge, wondering what else his boss could say or do that would cut him down. His wife advised him to just let the boss comments roll off his shoulders, that
the boss was just teasing. But Ken believed the comments, as innocuous as they were, had malicious intent. Ken is probably right
that there is likely more to the boss comments than simple teasing. According to experts, Ken is likely the target of a workplace bully. Though Ken, for purposes of this
paper, is a fictitious character, millions of workers are like Ken; theyre workers who are being targeted by bosses and co-workers.
