women as Willa Cather and Gertrude Stein. Both writers served the greater good of women through their portrayal of strong central female characters, as well as living lives that practiced
what they preached. In the end, more similar than dissimilar, both Cather and Stein portray distinct themes of feminism in their works during a time when women were still very
much considered second class citizens. Willa Cather Cather realized, both in her own life and in the lives of other women, the idea
of being a woman attempting to make it in a mans world. Whether success was desired in the workplace or on the domestic front, Cather realized that there could be,
often, dire consequences to a womans choice. In her work, My Antonia, for example, she illustrates that there are two types of women. There are those who believe that they
need a man to define who they are, and those women who do not want a man at all. Some examples of these types of women are inherent in the
characters of Tiny Soderball and Lena Lingard. "Country girls who had come to town to earn a living, and in nearly every case, to help the father struggle out
of debt, or to make it possible for the younger children of the family to go to school"( Cather 172)
