to gain access to the combat arena. During that period of time, it was unheard of for the female gender to step out onto the front lines and risk
her life, as women were supposed to uphold the familys hearth while the men were away at war. However, this particular battle represented a great deal of change within
and among the steadfast rules that had always applied in wars gone by: It was the birth of the strong, brave -- albeit unidentified -- female soldier. As a means
by which to honor these women who put their own lives at risk for the countrys good, a museum exhibit has been assembled with a number of period artifacts depicting
both the pride and horror these ladies experienced. The importance of this exhibit is clear in its content alone; there has been no greater display of bravery than by
having women abandon their families for the ravages of war. Not only is this exhibit worthy of presentation for its historical value, as "women cut their hair, put aside
their dresses, and passed themselves off as male soldiers" (Hall PG), but it is also for the positive contribution such involvement made to the people of the United States. Still,
the importance of such an exhibit runs far deeper than merely providing a source of interest for a curious community, because it uncovers artifacts from the Civil War that, until
