as they fought for what they believed in, and the separation of a nation (i.e., the South and the North) as both sides fought for economic and institutional superiority. What has not been described too much, however, was the sacrifice of Confederate women - the "Southern Belles" who supported their spouses and families during the very difficult times of war (which included sieges, hunger and death). As their men went off to war, these confederate women found themselves as the "men of the households." Instead of men taking care of them, the men where elsewhere taking care of business, meaning these women had to take care of the business of their homes - such as supervising planting, overseeing the slaves and generally keeping the home fires burning. Basically, in this scenario, the gentle Southern Belles contributed many skills to the war effort. One such skill, as evidenced by Mary Boykin Chesnut, was that of visual recorder. Chestnut, who was the wife of South Carolina U.S. Senator James Chesnut Jr. as well as the daughter of another U.S. senator, was in a unique position to view the war, as she had access not only to actual goings-on, but also to the major players of the war including confederacy president Jefferson Davis and others such as John Bell Hood and Wade Hampton; not to mention Robert E. Lee (Anonymous, 2002). She then wrote many of her recollections in a series of diaries which, according to experts, ended up being an outstanding view of the confederacy version of the Civil War.
