that links the work of the Sturm und Drang German writer with the feminist English writer. By the same token, comparing the two female protagonists in both novels - Elizabeth
in Frankenstein and Lotte in Werther could also be considered an exercise in futility, as one ends up dying a horribly violent death, while the other lives out her day
in peaceful serenity, with only the suicide of a would-be lover on her mind. However, in digging deep beneath the surface, some commonalties can be found between both women. Given
the times, both women are, of course, subservient to the decisions made by their men. Both are strong and serene women, who have a genuine affection for the male protagonists.

a sea captain). In addition, both protagonists die in the end, having failed to achieve their reason for being. Victor dies without finding the Creature he fashioned from his own
knowledge and hands; while Werther kills himself with a pistol because he cannot stand to share the same lifetime with the woman whom he loves with all of his heart.

In this paper, we will compare the personas of Werther and Victor Frankenstein, and also examine the woman whom these two men loved and lost.
