It can be stated that in Bronte, women found a champion that they could secretly admire and openly read. Jane Eyre, as states Joyce Carol Oates in her forward to the new edition of Brontes Eyre, has an attitude, this declaration of a unique and iconoclastic female rebelliousness, strikes the perfect note for the entire novel(Oates). During the Victorian era, women were beginning to lay the foundation for their eventual emancipation from the male dominated world in which they found themselves imprisoned. Herself quite the rebel, Bronte dared to offer an alternative view to the role of the female in a strict and confining society. Feeling ... clamoured wildly. "Oh, comply!" it said. " ... soothe him; save him; love him; tell him you love him and will be his. Who in the world cares for you? or who will be injured by what you do?" What has precipitated this passage is that a married man has made known his feelings for her, and she knows that she feels the same.
