In recent decades, much has been made about the learning organization, knowledge workers and the importance of knowledge management. For a topic that has received such wide scrutiny, however,
not a whole lot is really known about it (Pfeiffle). Knowledge management isnt new, however - Peter Drucker first introduced the concept of the "knowledge worker" in 1959, and followed
that up 10 years later with the concept of the "knowledge society" (Pfeiffle). However, Karl-Erik Sveiby was considered one of the so-called founding fathers of KM (The knowledge, 2002). Sveiby
himself acknowledges that the study of knowledge management has gone through several phases, first concerning the knowledge, competence and skills of people, then how information technology could help promote and
store that knowledge, and then recently, a shift back to the people (The knowledge, 2002). This has led to the fact that there is more to knowledge management then, well,
simply storing up knowledge for knowledges sake. But from knowledge management, we now have a new field, that of wisdom management -
and in searching the literature, there seems to be as much ambiguity about the purpose and definition of wisdom management as there is about knowledge management. But arent wisdom and
