is being asked to research the potential of wireless throughout the hospital, while having an understanding of security, privacy and cost issues. Are there privacy risks with wireless networks? Yes, there are - wireless depends on radio frequency usage - and RF can be compromised under certain scenarios. Paquette et al (2011) point out, for example, that the radio frequency spectrum spans a wide range - but the good news is that the wireless medical telemetry system (WMTS) band that is used for medical systems, as well as the industrial, scientific and medical (ISM) band, are more secure than your standard wireless band used by your average cell phone provider (Paquette et al, 2011). Though the wireless technology of 802.11 (as put forward by the IEEE) tends to be the most pervasive, security measures are inherent within the 802.11 suite of standards, along with additional security precautions that can - and should - be implemented on a network so that patient data is protected (Paquette et al, 2011). Encryption and authentication protocols come with such networks. Furthermore, wireless networks can be doubly protected with intrusion detection systems and/or intrusion prevention systems, consisting of a server, consoles and sensors (Paquette et al, 2011). Aside from security risks, there are other problems with going wireless - one of which is, believe it or not, interference from television channels and from medical devices and other equipment in the hospital (Paquette et al, 2011). Relying on the WMTS can help reduce interference, but this is a risk assessment that has to be considered when it comes to installing any kind of wireless system. Finally, there is the problem mentioned above, namely that ...
