been for one man -- William Smith -- such maps would not be in existence, nor with the study of stratigraphy. While William Smith was not the first man to
make maps, he was the first to improve on what was already there -- and as a result, Smith earned himself a definite place among most geologists.
Smiths life began inauspiciously, as he was born in 1769 on a farm in England (University of California/Berkeley, Museum of Paleontology). Although he had
little formal education, Smith always had an interest in exploring and collecting fossils (University of California/Berkeley, Museum of Paleontology). By the time he turned 18, he had become an assistant
surveyor, having learned his trade from master surveyor Edward Webb (University of California/Berkeley, Museum of Paleontology). The survey work meant Smith traveled throughout England, then supervised the excavation of the
Somerset Canal (University of California/Berkeley, Museum of Paleontology). Through his travels, Smith learned all about England; through his job of surveying canal routes, Smith learned how to examine local
rocks carefully and diligently (University of California/Berkeley, Museum of Paleontology). While examining the rocks, Smith had noted that the fossils found in a section of sedimentary rock tended to
be in a specific order from the bottom to the top of the section (University of California/Berkeley, Museum of Paleontology). He did not know this, but he was at
