people take their bodies - and bodily functions - for granted until something goes wrong. Then, suddenly, people become more aware of their bodies and whats wrong, rather than focusing
on whats right. A part of understanding whats right about our bodies and its processes is an understanding of the human bodys cells, and how they function.
As 19th century biologist pointed out " . . . the key to every biological problem must finally be sought in the cell; for every living
organism is, or at some time has been, a cell" (Machalek, 2005). But what, exactly, is a cell? Cells are defined as the smallest forms of life around, as well
as the building blocks of all living things, from plants, to animals, to humans (Machalek, 2005). The average human body contains more than a trillion cells, which are, in turn,
organized into more than 200 types (Machalek, 2005). An understanding of cells, and cellular structure, tells us how these building blocks function in areas of operation from carrying fuel and
proteins to various parts of the body, to disposing of wastes that would otherwise kill an organism. Whether an organism boasts a single
cell or trillions of cells, these cells share a network of what is called organelles that allow the cell to function (Cell structures and functions, 2009). Common organelles are the
nucleus, cytoplasm and the surface; the latter of which keeps everything held together. An understanding of these organelles, and how they function, provides us with an understanding of how life
is sustained. For example, chromosomes are an important part of the nucleus; they pass along genetic information to offspring and provide the impetus for cell division when it comes to
