in a petrie dish and then mixed together to form a type of Frankenstein type of replica of the host. President George W. Bush, in his 2006 State of the
Union address went one step further, stating that a national ban on cloning was necessary, to prevent the creation of "human-animal hybrids" (Cohen, 2006). As Cohen and others point out,
however, even the most skilled genetic engineers cant manufacture whole-body human beings (or half-man, half-animals) -- nor would they want to. Furthermore,
the idea of breeding only perfect children from cloning is also kind of a horror story gone wild. But again, trying to guess even the sex of a child while
in utero is difficult. Cloning such a child would be, at this point, a little more timely and costly than is seriously viable.
As of now, the idea of human cloning is that of embryonic cloning; that of replicating embryonic cells, predominantly for treatment of genetic diseases. This is an area in
which the United States is strong, and should continue to be strong, despite continuous calls for banning funding on cellular cloning and research.
Before determining why the U.S. would be a good keeper of cloning, it might be a good idea to describe, what exactly, cloning is. Cloning, in its most
basic definition, refers to any process or procedure that results in the creation of an exact replica (or near-exact replica) of a DNA molecule, cell or individual plant, animal or
human (U.S. Government, 2002). Cloning is not just a man-made phenom -- it occurs in nature as well (U.S. Government, 2002). Identical twins are a good example of cloning occurring
