Foods popularized the concept of health food stores in a supermarket format during a time in which health food stores were musty, small places with interesting-looking foods. Whole Foods brought
organic and natural foods into the light of day, putting it in bright, clean stores. Once the concept took off, Whole Foods expanded in the United States and internationally.
But there is more than offering organic foods in a supermarket setting that has helped Whole Foods achieve a great deal of success. The
organizations structure, as well as dedication to employees, has also helped this company achieve success. Is this, then, the key to an organizations
success? Is it a matter of treating employees like valued members, rather than cogs in a machine? Or is there something else in Whole Foods that has helped this company
achieve its organizational goals? The characteristics of Whole Foods Whole Foods stresses teamwork from the start; potential hires are informed that each
department in each store is made up of a "small, decentralized entrepreneurial team whose members have complete control over who joins the group" (Erickson and Gratton, 2007; 106). The new
hire gets a four-week trial period, after which team members vote on whether the individual stays or goes (Erickson and Gratton, 2007). The trainee requires two-thirds of the votes to
