of the tired clich?d sayings about change and manages to give is a fresh slant. The key to this books success is simple: mice. Viewing life as a metaphor between
cheese and mice, manages to place into perspective those changes which are necessary and those changes which simply exist to make ones life miserable. Tongue in cheek, Johnson names
the two mice Scurry and Sniff. However, Scurry and Sniff are not alone in the maze o life. They have some human counterparts named, laughably, Hem and Haw. For the
mice, change is either curse or blessing without any middle ground. However, Hem and Haw seem to dwell or place themselves in a place where they tend to dwell on
the middle ground, without as much success as the mice. Johnsons point throughout the book is that all change has a blessing
component to it. Many grandmothers have been quoted as saying that there is a silver lining to every cloud, and this is the same type of message. However, knowing that
the silver lining is there and actually being able to see it, is where the big catch is. Johnson states that in order to be successful one needs to understand
the nature of ones goals (the cheese) and the role it plays in a persons life. The contrast, of course, is between
the mice and the humans. The mice only see the cheese as sustenance and nothing more. However, the humans seek to define themselves by the cheese, their acquisition of the
cheese, and even the type of cheese that they are able to obtain. Placed in this perspective monetary success all seems a bit infantile.
