and development of the World Health Organizations. The article looks at the importance of the health organisation and the way in which it made a difference in the first ten years of its existence. The articles starts with background setting the seen. Prior to the creation of the World Health Organization there had already been an international recognition of the importance of global health issues. Since 1851 there had been regular conferences on communicable diseases, there was also the formation of the LOffice International dHygine Publique and the Pan American Sanitation Bureau which preceded the development of the League of Nations Health Office. It was only in 1948 that the World Health Organisation was founded as a part of the United Nations and took over the role that had been played by the Health Office. This development was seen as a very important move. The paper then outlines the position that the World Health Organization had to deal with. This was the aftermath of the Second World War and there were many public health issues concerning communicable diseases. Included in the article is a summary of the challenges faced, such as Malaria in Africa, Asia and South America, as well as the threat from Typhoid and Small Pox as well as the spread of sexually transmitted diseases and the manmade threat of DDT. It was against this background that the World Health Organization started operations and the article notes that there was the need to restore or in many case set up from scratch the systems to help stop or slow down the spread of disease vector borne or otherwise.
