seems to be announcing more dire news about another company laying off yet more employees. Ironically enough however, compared to the 7.4
average unemployment rate during the 1980s and 1990s, the current unemployment average of 6.1 percent is a great deal less (Schwartz, 2003). Yet it seems as though this particular bout
of unemployment seems more severe and dire than unemployment of previous times. Nelson Schwartz, in his June 23, 2003 Fortune magazine article
"Down and out in white-collar America" points out several reasons why this particular recession and unemployment seems harder on white-collar workers (such as accountants).
For one thing, Schwartz notes that ever-increasingly sophisticated technology, while allowing businesses to hum along and increase productivity, has managed to do this without adding additional manpower (Schwartz,
2003). According to Schwartz, one white-collar worker today can do the work that would have taken two or three white-collar workers 10 years ago (Schwartz, 2003). In short, while technology
has done a great job in boosting productivity, its also meant that fewer men and women are needed to do twice the work.
This has been especially true in accounting. Twenty years ago, the profession of accounting mainly focused on spreadsheets and the basics. These days, software is available that do everything
from balance income statements to pay quarterly taxes to the IRS, thus pretty much rendering some members of the profession as unnecessary.
Schwartz also reminds us that another aspect hitting the white-collar work force is that many white-collar jobs are being shipped overseas, much like blue-collar jobs were done a decade ago
