of rebellious and thankless members. In the end, however, the only thing one can hope to determine from reading vast accounts about Vietnam is an overall understanding of all of
the components of that war, including the errors that were made via governmental policies, public opinion, and how those effected operations in Vietnam. Most people today have heard of
the Vietnam War, but that is just about as far as the information goes. Most of the population does not know where Vietnam is, let alone know why the United
States government felt compelled to take a police action toward another country. For the generation that is so removed from those who served in Vietnam, this book can stand to
bridge the gap between those who fought in a war that was not supported by most of the population, nor its soldiers, and of the significant sacrifices that they made.
Those sacrifices are still the legacy of the families of the men who returned home, not the boys that went to war, but the soldiers that returned.
In brief, the first troops were sent into Vietnam in 1965. This occurred because of Cold War sentiment which had as its goal halting the
spread of communism globally. The French government had been in authority over Southeast Asian theater, but when it looked as if things were heating up and that France could no
longer contain the internal strife, America stepped in to support the presidency of Ngo Dinh Diem. This was disastrous as his own men assassinated him, leaving the United States holding
the political bag. Ho Chi Minh determined that this was the perfect time to try and reunite North and South Vietnam, and so the US felt compelled to hold South
