In other words, while the pace of everyday life has quickened, the basic needs of the very young child have not quickened and are still very much the same needs that children have had for centuries. Rima Shores book, What Kids Need: Todays Best Ideas for Nurturing, Teaching, and Protecting Young Children offers those who are involved in the day to day care and upbringing of the very young child an advocate and advisor. In the early nineties several studies suggested that much of what shapes a persons life choices are established in the early years of ones life. All of a sudden everyone jumped on the bandwagon to offer some sort of early childhood program or intervention. What was missing from these early programs, Shore offers, was a child centered mentality instead of the scientifically and academically based outlook which prevailed at the time. Shore points to at least a decades worth of research in this book to offer her advice on what constitutes the child-centered learning program. What one particularly finds useful in this book is the practical advice along with the posing of the problems. Many times books which are produced only serve to point out what is wrong without offering any credible solutions. Rima Shores book, offers both. In fact, one point that she makes and which every childcare director should keep in mind is that parents matter and matter a great deal in the life of a child.
