The conclusion that he reaches is that Americans are those people who believed that honest, hard, work would grant him great wealth and plenty in a bountiful land. Given his view was penned centuries ago, one has to wonder if Crevecoeurs view might have changed after so many years, or if the same basic and inherent qualities which he so admired, are also to be found in the contemporary American. "Here the rewards of his industry follow with equal steps the progress of his labour; his labour is founded on the basis of nature, self-interest; can it want a stronger allurement?" writes Crevecoeur. Meaning, that the American sees his prosperity as being intrinsically tied in to the amount of work that he is willing to do. If a man wants to get ahead, it is possible in America. Though this is a strong sentiment, still even to this day, one has to challenge whether this is so any longer. With so many now on the welfare rolls and so many unemployed, it would seem that the American is not one who labors for his prosperity, but one who has become accustomed to entitlements. However, his statement also embodies that characteristic which is most American. The American is one who wants the best that life has to offer. How the American goes about obtaining that best that life has to offer is what differs greatly from the colonial model, it has to be said. During Colonial days, if a person wanted to survive they had to work, to pull his fair share.
