striking correlations which may lend a clearer insight into the making of a literary monster, and why mankind has such a fascination with them. Perhaps Shellys monster lends some of
the more insightful answers as to mankinds fascination and definition of monster. At the very least, here is a monster that is not quite human, but not quite fiend. There
is a depth of soul to Frankensteins monster which in many respects makes him a worse abomination. Thus, one can deduce from this portrayal and depth of character that Shelly
offers the definition of monster to be something which was once human, but through a series of events or circumstance, is horribly removed from humanity. There is a subsequent lack
of total humanity. Thus, while Frankensteins monster possesses some human qualities, it is evident that he is not human. A monster, then, lacks that true sense of empathy or sympathy
for mankind. This may be why the monster is never given a name. He is not a man; he is a monster. However, this is only part of the definition
of monster that Shelly offers. In like kind she offers for examination the type of monster that takes no responsibility for his actions, presumes himself to be above the laws
of nature and of mankind. This would, then, point squarely at the doctor himself. Dr. Frankenstein creates his monster out of spare parts found in a morgue. What he brings
to life, he swears has no soul. But does it? Shelley gives ample evidence to support that not only does the monster possess a soul, but that in many ways,
