sometimes easier said than done. Today, one is faced with all sorts of competing ideas as regard the human condition, how one should act, what ones responsibilities should be. How
does one determine what the actual moral and ethical obligations are? This is not a new question. In fact, many of the worlds greatest writers and philosophers have asked
the same question. Many of them were facing extreme pressures in life when they contemplated the question. Others would have the optimism that despite mans capacity for such evil, out
of such depth, good is still possible. No matter what ones mindset, it is clear that each author finally came to terms with their answer to this question. A person
is morally obligated to exercise good judgment. Good moral judgment is not a simple act of obedience, but it is something which has become internalized and actually gives one pleasure
in the performing of it. These habits, then, are what determines the state of a persons character and gives rise to the personality traits by which he will be governed
his whole life. Firstly, virtues are choices that one makes, rather than an innate reaction to something, and these states of character are cultivated through a process of practice, or
repetition, thus forming a habit. In other words, the virtuous man will take pleasure in acting good because it is an expression of who he is. In D.H. Lawrences short
story, The Rocking Horse Winner, it becomes evident that the moral and ethical duty of the parents to the son was to allow him to be who he was. But,
they cant see past their greed and the boy, committed to loving his parents, kills himself in order to satisfy their dreams. In essence, then, mankinds moral obligation is not
