If we as a nation do not address the plight of homeless women and children in our country, we soon will be as credible as the person who shoots
themselves in the foot and then wonders why their shoe doesnt fit. Historically, women and children have been regarded as chattel: some thing or things to be traded, bought,
or sold, as any possession might be. If a woman and her children are homeless, the situation is little changed. When homelessness first began to increase during the 1980s,
there was a perception by many service providers and those in government that almost all of the homeless population was single adult males. One reason is that most of
the homeless people who are visible --such as panhandlers or people sleeping on park benches -- are men.
