165 grocery stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, New York and West Virginia (Biesada, 2010). In addition, Weis Markets operates stores under other names such as Mr. Zs, Food Mart,
Knings Supermarkets, Save-a-Lot and Scots Lo-Cost (Biesada, 2010). The company also owns and operates more than 25 SuperPets pet supply stores in 10 southern and midwestern states (Biesada, 2010).
In 2009, the company promoted chief operating officer David Hepfinger to the role of president and CEO, succeeding Norman Rich, who retired (Biesada,
2010). "Buying local" is a hot trend in the food industry, and Weis Markets is involved with that particular trend by selling locally raised beef (dubbed Pennsylvania Proud Choice Angus
Beef, which is supplied by farms throughout the area) (Biesada, 2010). Now that we know something about Weis Markets, lets see how
the four functions of management can be applied to how this mostly family-owned business operates. The first function is planning - in this
regard, a manager needs to determine the organizations goals, and how to achieve those goals (Rothbauer-Wanish, 2009). That information typically comes from an organizations mission and vision (Rothbauer-Wanish, 2009). In
glancing at Weis Markets website, there isnt a specific vision or mission statement, but we can get a general idea of both by examining the companys history. The mission, we
can deduce, is to remain local - in other words, use Pennsylvania vendors, in its efforts to be a "good neighbor" to customers (Weis Markets - History, 2010). Local produce
