War propaganda is nothing new, however. War propaganda has been used to great effect by many nations throughout mankinds history. What is propaganda, per se? Websters dictionary defines it a couple of ways: 1. "The systematic propagation of a doctrine or cause or of information reflecting the views and interests of those advocating such a doctrine or cause"(Webster 2003). 2. "Material disseminated by the advocates or opponents of a doctrine or cause: wartime propaganda"(Webster 2003). So, one can see that propaganda is a deliberate attempt to influence the beliefs and actions of a mass of people through the manipulation of ideas, facts, and even sometimes, lies. Marketing execs and advertisers do this all of the time. Its benignly called, slant or spin meaning that somewhere buried in the wording or implied meaning, there is a grain of truth. This use of propaganda has a very long history, including nearly every war that the US has been involved with. But lest it be thought that the United States would never engage in using the press in this manner, some excellent examples remain which show what media savvy can make the difference. Consider that Harriet Beecher Stowes book influenced a nations president so much that it moved him to declare war against the Southern states of America. Of course, both sides of the Civil War issue used propaganda to extreme measures. Images, fiction and religious propaganda were used to convert citizens to their side.
