hell on Earth, is it ever justifiable? That would seem to depend on ones own point of reference. Christians tend to have a different perspective when it comes to armed
conflict. JUST WAR THEORY At the very forefront of the Christian discourse about war was St. Thomas Aquinas, whose Summa Theologica presents a very specific outline of what has
become known as the Just War Theory. Aquinas discusses not only the justification of war, but also the kinds of activities or operations that are permissible, in his opinion, in
war. Given that there are certain criteria that need to be met, one has to wonder if Enduring Freedom, the fight against terrorism, meets those criteria. Firstly, it should be
said that a country should have just cause. Meaning that a just war is not started or initiated by a need to acquire more land or to fight over possession
of perceived value, but rather is a decision that is based on some principle such as self defense or an initial defensive action to prevent an attack. Another characteristic
of a just war is that it is declared after careful consideration and with proper authority. A Just War also has what is called a right intention. This means that
the war has a specific goal in mind. NON-CHRISTIAN VIEWPOINT The problem, the non-Christian would say, is that these rules are either too vague in regard as to what the
rules are, which then gives license to break the rules at will, or, as in the case of the intrinsicists view, the militarys hands are so tied by red tape
and rhetoric that no objectives can be reached. Likewise, the non-Christian is more likely, one should think, to devalue human life so as to make them ready to jump into
