to allow students to connect in order to make use of the resources and aid their studies. There is a dichotomy here, whilst there needs to be security and data as well as the physical network needs to be protected there is also the need to ensure that it is accessible. This leads to several considerations in terms of security issues. Wide area networks differ from local area networks in several ways as well as the obvious similarities. wide area network is therefore more versatile and suited to many other users in addition to those who use local area networks. The police are an excellent example of this. The networks may be based on wired or wireless. One issue which appears to be of concern regarding wireless networks and not the wired networks is that of security. The wireless version is perceived as less secure by the customers of the systems. However, this perception is not correct, as there are the same security threats to each system, with the single difference of the wireless system not having the potential threats of damage to the wires. Therefore, we looking at security the same security measures should be taken for wired or wireless networks. Threats such as interception of unauthorised users are at the same level of risk as with a wired network. The major controls are those of physical accesses and user authorisation to prevent the misuse of the network. If anything due to the large amount of wire in a wired network there are many more security risks due to the additional entry points to the network.
