a leap forward, bringing with each new discovery a new standard, form, or innovation. In the literary field most were still using the poetic forms to convey their ideas, but
it would be Walter Scott, a Scottish nobleman, who would move literature into a new form: the short story. Many would argue that Walter Scott only capitalized on the exquisite
foundation that had already been laid by such notables such as Shakespeare, decades earlier. However, upon a careful analysis of many of his works, and of the work being produced
by his contemporaries, it is evident that Scott had begun to depart from the traditional forms with many of his earlier works, to be perfected in his later works.
Biography To understand the events which brought this evolution to a climax, one must understand the man to which it came. It is often enough said that out of great
pain comes great art. If this is so, then it is certain to have applied to Walter Scott. As an infant, most biographers relate, Scott would contract Polio. During his
day and age, many did not survive Polio, so the fact that he managed to overcome this illness, especially as an infant, is rather remarkable in itself. He would forever
be left with a limp as a reminder of his close call, however. However, because of this illness, he would often be sent to live on his Grandfathers
farm because of the healthier climate than Edinburgh where his family lived. His grandfather lived in Borders, and would play a significant factor in shaping Scotts knowledge of nature. In
addition, when he lived with his grandfather he was able to attend an elementary school with other children, thus giving him the social interaction that he no doubt craved. When
