the nature of a persons soul and the hidden desires of ones heart have often been rendered into the tiniest of creatures or the most interesting worn pathways, though not
acclaimed by his own contemporaries. In his most noted work, The Leaves of Grass, one can readily see how he works with the language and through this tell something about
the man who was, perhaps, a visionary of his day. The original Leaves of Grass was first released in 1855. Most collectors and lovers of books (both old and new)
will state that the first edition Leaves of Grass is, indeed, very rare. Only four are known to be in existence to this day. The book would go through at
least five revisions during Whitmans lifetime, but the first, it has to be said, was most significant. This first edition served to introduce the world to the inner thoughts
of Walt Whitman. The book begins with a ten page preface in which he explains why this book of poetry has been created. It is through this reading of the
preface that the reader first gets the idea that this collection will be no mere musings of idle fancy. This man has a passion for the message that he feels
mankind needs to hear. One of those messages is that of the role of poetry, for himself, and for mankind. He sees himself as a type of prophet, perhaps
because he foresees the reaction that will come from his presentation of the facts. Of himself he writes that as a poet "the others are as good as he, only
he sees it and they do not"(Whitman). There are several indications that he may have been influenced by some of Emersons work.
