a huge enterprise on a pair of mouse ears, but in the early 2000s, it was an enterprise that was in deep trouble. Floundering around in the advent of the
digital age, the company was under the rule of Michael Eisner, a brilliant and charismatic leader with vision who, nonetheless, managed to alienate almost everyone he met. During the mid-2000s,
he resigned amid a great deal of bad will and Robert Iger quietly stepped in to take his place. When Iger
took over the helm of Disney Corp. in 2005, a lot needed changing. Iger, who was in the shadow of the very flamboyant Michael Eisner for years, was saddled with
a divisive and suspicious board, chaos on management and a hostile takeover bid from Comcast (Siklos, 2009). Furthermore, when Iger was named as Eisners successor, not every investor agreed with
the decision, believing Iger was Eisners "yes man" (Siklos, 2009). But Iger has surprised a lot of people - hes brought
calm to the "House of Mouse," while promoting a very hands-off style in direct contrast to his predecessor (LaPorte et al, 2007).
Iger determined, at the time, that Disney would be better off building cross-promotion, cross-platform products was the way to go (Siklos, 2009). Along these lines, one of his first
moves was to refocus on "franchises," in other words, "something that creates value across multiple businesses and across multiple territories over a long period of time" (Siklos, 2009, 81). The
other action he took days after he took the job was to acquire Pixar Films, which has been instrumental in contributing to the companys bottom line (Siklos, 2009).
