Once upon a time, people mentioning that theyd bought an article of clothing at a Walmart store might be treated to a pitying smile at best,
or outright derision at worst. Wal-Mart was a discount store; given its primarily locations in smaller, more rural towns, it was considered the place where one would go to buy
off-the-rack fashion that looked off-the-rack. Sure, it was cheap. But even if it didnt look cheap, the Wal-Mart brand had little, if any, cache among the fashion-conscious.
But then some changes came along. Wal-Mart Stores Inc. started working with different suppliers. The cost of design and production in clothing meant that high-end
fashion was becoming more than high cost, it was becoming impossible to afford. And Walmart stores moved out of the smaller, rural towns into the secondary and primary markets.
On top of all of that, recession hit. Though economists wouldnt say so at the time, its now been proven that the
U.S. economy has been in a recession since December 2007 - and its going to be a long while before it goes away.
Therefore, with the increase in costs in design and production, combined with a downturn in consumer spending, thanks to the current economic crisis, Wal-Mart stores are looking at not
just supplying products at low prices. The chain could be stepping into the role as the place to go for the latest in design fashions; and at a relatively inexpensive
