2010). These days, Wal-Mart continues to try to stick to that mantra of low prices so people can "live better." Part of the way in which the company does this
is by offering lower prices than the competition. Another way in which the company does this is by running an extraordinarily lean supply chain that saves the company money. The
company, in turn, can then pass along the savings to the suppliers. Walton, regarded as "a gifted merchant and a born tightwad" (Bianco, 2007; p 46) pinched pennies in areas
such as wages and perks - there were no perks - to furnishings. Wal-Mart sold, and continues to sell, at a perpetual discount to make up for volume what it
might have lost in margin (Bianco, 2007). But the question we ask here is whether the "save money, live better" mantra takes all
stakeholders into account. If were to read media accounts (and website such as "I Hate Wal-Mart" and "Wal-Mart Sucks") the answer would be that while revenues are still pretty much
okay for shareholders, and while customers are getting some decent deals, and while suppliers can count on a loyal client in Wal-Mart, its the employees who are getting the short
end of the stick. In 2007, Bianco wrote in BusinessWeek that company CEO H. Lee Scott and his staff were struggling to
deal with the ramifications of "save money, live better." Part of meeting that goal was to aggressively expand through most of the 2000s (Bianco, 2007). But since the late 1990s,
