objects . . ." as well as the worlds #1 retailer, employing more than 2.1 million in more than 8,400 stores worldwide (Biesada, 2011). But can an organization of this
size and span really be a learning organization? To answer this, lets first define what a learning organization is. Business guru Peter Senge
introduced the concept of the learning organization in the early 1990s, describing such an entity as a place where "people continually expand their capacity to create the results they truly
desire," where different patterns of thinking are encouraged and where individuals are encouraged to see the whole together (Smith, 2001). The learning organization, in other words, involves encouraging the individuals
within the organization to learn and grow, to be part of a team, to be a part of something larger than themselves and to recreate (Smith, 2001). More specifically, Senge
points out five disciplines important to learning organizations such as systems thinking, personal mastery, mental models, building shared vision and team learning (Smith, 2001). Rather than being helpless reactive participants,
individuals in a learning organization are proactive, understanding theyre part of a whole. Is this the case for Wal-Mart? To examine the media,
not really. All one reads about this organization is that its goal is to put mom-and-pop businesses out of work at the expense of profits and that it wrings employees
