labor unions, ex-employees and other retailers consistently criticize Wal-Marts mission and its aggressive strategy. Wal-Marts mission, on the surface, is a folksy one. The company claims that its simple mission
is to save people money, so they can live better (Wal-Mart, 2008). The corporate strategy is, quite simply to maintain a capital efficiency model, focused on return on investment (Wal-Mart,
2008). The strategy tries to balance returns against growth and in the most recent annual report, the company noted that its trying to balance its growth in the United States
with international expansion (Wal-Mart, 2008). This is a standard business model for many companies, and the mission is certainly one that seems to target the customer, not to mention
the employee. One way in which Wal-Mart is saving money for its shareholders is by violating wage and hour mandates from the U.S. federal government (Wal-Mart Watch, 2008). As of
, Wal-Mart faced more than 80 lawsuits about issues ranging from managers holding down labor costs by forcing employees to work off the clock, to manipulating time and wage
records (Wal-Mart Watch, 2008). The irony here is that what Wal-Mart had hoped to save through the violations are costing the company in court costs and legal fees. Wal-Mart has
also not made it a secret that it despises unions - in 2005, the company said it would close the first of its stores anywhere in North America that would
unionize (Economist, 2005). Wal-Mart claims it has very good reasons for not accepting unions at its stores. Unions artificially inflate salaries, they point out, and supposedly Wal-Mart employees are already
earning well above the minimum wage. Unions also mean that walkouts can be staged if the labor union doesnt agree with management - and this is a loss that Wal-Mart
