area. Wal-Mart Stores Inc., based in Bentonville, AR, is the worlds number one retailer (Biesada, 2010). The company has more than 7,800 stores
around the world, which breaks down into about 890 discount stores, more than 2,900 combination discount/grocery stores and 600 warehouse stores (Biesada, 2010). Though 55% of its store are in
the U.S., Wal-Mart is continuing its international expansion (Biesada, 2010). Though most people are familiar with Wal-Marts front of store operations (thanks
to its promotion consisting of "Save Money, Live Better"), behind that front-of-store is a vast and complex inventory system that is tightly run and efficient. With it goal to provide
the lowest possible cost to consumers, Wal-Marts functional areas include retailing, marketing, distribution, finance and human resources (Sago, 2003). To support its functional areas and their activities, Wal-Mart hires the
right employees who have the right experience, and also designs operations to minimize costs (Sago, 2003). Though much of the companys negative press screams about low wages and no benefits
being paid to employees (which is why prices are so low), its actually Wal-Marts tightly controlled supply chain that saves money. Wal-Mart then passes those savings on to consumers.
To keep those functional areas active, Wal-Mart is careful to build core competencies throughout its organization in the functional areas of retailing, inventory
control, customer service, finance and cost control, product selection and acquisitions (Sago, 2003). Because the people operating in these functional areas are experts at what they do, inefficiencies are minimized
