and how these trends might impact the organization. Wal-Mart, headquartered in Bentonville, Arkansas, is the worlds number-one retailers, larger than Europes Carrefour, Tesco
and Metro AG combined (Biesada, 2010). The company has 2.1 million employees who work at more than 8.400 stores worldwide (Biesada, 2010). These include about 800 discount stores, 3,100 combination
discount/grocery stores and 595 Sams Club warehouses (Biesada, 2010). The company has operations in Canada and Mexico (where it is the number-one retailer there), as well as operations in Asia
(it owns a 95% stake in Japanese retailers SEIYU) (Biesada, 2010). To help manage gains made during the global recession and to become a more efficient operator, Wal-Mart is in
the process of both restructuring its U.S. operations and is forming a new division to oversee global e-commerce (Biesada, 2010). Wal-Mart has also formed a global sourcing partnership with Hong
Kong-based Li & Fung (Biesada, 2010). There is little doubt that Wal-Mart is a transnational corporation, a multinational behemoth that, like it or
not, is doing quite well during the current recession. The irony, however, is that Wal-Mart, in recent decades, has struggled mightily with a variety of diversity issues in terms of
whats going on at its headquarters and what is happening within its stores (especially in the United States). Author Ben Johnson (2010)
