2000s, the company has taken a huge beating from personnel and human resources points of view. Class-action suits, along with accusations of using illegal immigrants (thanks to a 2000 midnight raid that took place in Miami, Fla.) is casting doubts upon the companys wholesome image as a great place to work and a great place from which to purchase products. How is Wal-Mart responding to such accusations and how is this company going to salvage its reputation? In this paper, well examine some of the situations in which the company h as been in and well also examine how the company is trying to handle its PR crisis. Two ways in which the company has tried to brush up its image has been to hire an African-American to run its "People Division" as executive vice president (Weber, 2004). Also, in California, Wal-Mart is trying to answer critics through advertisements, in which case the company calls itself a "target for negative comments from certain elected officials, competitors and special-interest groups" (Weber, 2004, p. 22). The ads its running disputes accusations that it pays employees lower wages than similar retailers, claiming that health benefits are available to full- and part-time employees (Weber, 2004). It promotes the benefits of being in a community, including jobs and donations to local charities (Weber, 2004). Despite the advertising, however, its clear that Wal-Mart does have a problem, at least in terms of diversity. Even Sam Walton, at one point, admitted in his autobiography that it tends to be more difficult for women to be promoted to upper management because they are required to relocated on a moments notice (Daniels, 2003).
