Stores Inc. has moved well beyond the Ozarks to become a global discount retailing phenom. It is the worlds #1 retailer, employing 2.1 million people in close to 9,000 stores
across North America, Latin America and Europe. In Japan, Wal-Mart owns a 95 percent stake in Japanese retailers SEIYU, has a huge stake in ASDA in the United Kingdom, and
is pushing into Africa (Biesada, 2011). In an effort to source globally, Wal-Mart recently struck a partnership with Li & Fung in Hong Kong, which is acting as the companys
buying agent (Biesada, 2011). Another interesting aspect about Wal-Mart is that its supply chain, both domestically and globally, is very efficient. It has
to be. The companys strategy is that of low prices - to reach that particular strategy, a cost-effective supply chain is a must; savings from the supply chain are then
passed on to consumers. Supply chain management, or SCM, in its most basic form, involves management of two-way flow of materials, finances,
information and personnel both within and between organizations (Supply Chain Management, 2005). The end goal of SCM is a synchronized movement of the logistics from manufacturer, to supplier, to wholesaler,
to retailer, to consumer (Supply Chain Management, 2005). According to some sources, the standard supply chain has five components: Plan, source, manufacturing, delivery and return. For purposes of this paper,
and the organization, Wal-Mart, well add a sixth component; that of warehousing and distribution. In addition to describing these plans fully, well examine some of the potential problems related to
