the general news media, one gets the impression that Wal-Mart is a terrible corporation with an awful corporate culture, and that its only goal is to wring what it can
from workers before spitting them out - all in the name of lower prices to the consumer. My contention, however, is that, while Wal-Mart has certainly had its share of
violations in various areas, it isnt alone. It just seems to be the company that makes news when it comes to these so-called "ethical" issues.
The question we need to ask, first and foremost, is whether the ethical issues Wal-Mart faces are any different than those faced in any other large company. Well,
a study of the overall media suggests that no, Wal-Mart is not alone when it comes to its day in court. A recent article in Bloomberg Businessweek focused on Sams
Club competitor CostCo Wholesale Corp. In this particular case, women sued the company in 2004, claiming that promotions of female employees to management roles was limited (Fisk and Gullo, 2011).
The likelihood is strong that if I dug around for issues plaguing other retailers, Id find similar complaints ranging from Fair Labor Standard Acts violations to discrimination.
The problem I have when it comes to pinning these ethical issues on the company itself is the same problem the U.S. Supreme Court recently had
when it ruled against the class-action nature of Wal-Mart vs. Dukes. Basically, it was the store managers of these stores, rather than the corporation itself, that forced employees to work
