A lot of this will end up depending on how many people prefer to go on line to order from Wal-Mart, versus actually going to
a Wal-Mart store. Its well-known that its a lot less expensive to service a customer on line (as there is no overhead costs and no costs in terms of personnel).
But Wal-Mart, unlike ebay or Amazon is a clicks-and-mortar business, rather than a "pure play" Internet business. Wal-Mart might be
incurring more customer-borne costs in the beginning, as it plans to offer products from all 25 categories that might be carried in a typical Wal-Mart discount store (as well as
higher-priced products). But overall, given the fact that demographics are shifting and more and more people are going online, customer=-borne costs could decrease as more and more customers visit Wal-Mart
online. Do you think Wal-Mart.com is likely to create additional value? While Wal-Mart.com might not necessarily create additional value to the
balance sheet, in terms of the market it can reach, the presence in cyberspace and the ease of ordering (and receiving those orders) will definitely increase value in the customers
eyes, as this is yet another outlet by which they can save money from the convenience of their own home. In
terms of value, therefore, its not necessarily monetary (though a Web site for a company such as Wal-Mart could certainly pull in a great deal of revenue), but its an
