market overall is very sensitive to various trends. When layoffs occur, Wall Street is happy (because it shows corporations are cutting costs), so stock go up. When oil prices go
up, it seems, stock prices go down. Because stocks are, in their most basic sense, pieces of a company, whatever news impacts
a company is bound to impact that industrys stock prices as well. For example, when the poison scare hit Tylenol in 1983 (when poison was found in Tylenol pain reliever
caplets), the whole pharmaceutical industry suffered on the stock market until the culprit was apprehended. In this paper, well examine whats going
on with Wachovia Corp. But before continuing, lets examine the chart from late September through early December 2004 (source: Yahoo.Finance.com - 2004):
First, an explanation of what Wachovia is and what it does. The company (which trades on the NYSE) bills itself as "one of the largest providers of
financial services to retail, brokerage and corporate customers" (Wachovia Corporation, 2004). The company has four major businesses - the bank itself, capital management, wealth management and the corporate/investment bank (Wachovia
Corporation, 2004). So the bank is somewhat of a powerhouse and is likely to be impacted by monetary and consumer affairs. Though not the largest bank, Wachovia has become large
enough to have some impact on the overall industry. Another thing that needs to be kept in mind when reviewing this is
