and Japan would play a significant role in W.W.II and other nations would be integral to the end of W.W.I. The idea that the world wars are central to Europe
is really a misnomer. World War I did have a variety of venues. It was fought in the Middle East and in Africa and in Asia. There is the notion
that oil played a significant role in maneuvering during that war and the Middle East was replete with oil reserves. Although many major battles would be fought on European
turf, that does not mean other areas should be ignored. They too played an important part in the context of life during wartime. These other regions fought and had casualties
and all too often are ignored. In embarking on the events that would occur outside of Europe during the First World War, it pays to take the totality of the
war into account. How did it start? What happened there? It is only when one understands the significance of the war, how various nations entered the picture, its beginning and
end, that one will understand the reason why it spread. This is a war that started in Europe but of course--as its name suggests--would affect the entire world.
II. World War One World War I begins when the Archduke Ferdinand, who is heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary, is assassinated by a Serbian in Sarajevo
(Miller & Faux, 1997). Although hard to believe, it is this assassination that would prompt a string of events that would lead to an all out war. Austria-Hungary would soon
