social forms, and material traits of a racial, religious, or social group" ("Culture" PG). A student writing on this subject will find that the concept or racism is a bit
more enigmatic. There are various views on what racism is and what it is not. Some African Americans hold that they themselves cannot be racist by definition but others will
beg to differ. Some believe that indeed anyone who hates another due to the color of their skin is by definition a racist. For arguments sake, a middle of the
road definition may be used to explore the topic. McCulloch defines racism as something that includes any ideology or system of ideas, values, ethics or beliefs where race and
racial differences are recognized and given weight (McCulloch PG). In looking at the black experience, as it has evolved over decades and centuries, culture and racism are rather important. African
Americans for the most part started out as slaves, but those who came to America also came with a culture. For example, even though blacks were enslaved they were able
to keep at least a semblance of their culture together. In fact, there has been somewhat of a movement to restore black culture in American communities so that it does
not get lost. Culture is important but racism is another fact of life--though an unfortunate one--for blacks in America today. Racism against black people in America has
seemed to always exist. Perhaps it is because they began as an enslaved people, or perhaps it is just the nature of people to hate others who are different. In
