War and barely missed slavery. He witnessed extraordinary social changes during his long and productive life. He also played a critical part in many of those changes. DuBois was not only a voice in achieving black equality, he took an active role in achieving equality for women as well. Interestingly, Du Bois preceded the Civil Rights movement in the United States by almost five decades. Many of the philosophies espoused by Du Bois, however, didnt become possible until the Civil Rights Movement. There were numerous demographic, judicial and political reasons for this time lapse between his urging of Americans to action and them actually undertaking the measures which he suggested. He argued for equality for all humans. Du Bois activism came largely in the form of his writings. One of his most widely recognized works was The Souls of Black Folks published in 1903. William H. Ferris wrote in 1913 that this book: "was the rebellion of a fearless soul, the protest of a noble nature against the blighting American cast prejudice". (Ferris, 1913, pg. 599). DuBois recognized that this prejudice was not limited to racial prejudice but extended to sexual prejudice as well. The Souls of Black Folks differed from Du Bois previous works which, true to his training in history and sociology at Harvard, were rooted more in factual historic and sociologic coverage more so than a look into the heart of a people.
