its practice. He was not merely an extraordinary statistician and educator, but he was most importantly an innovative business philosopher that could teach and inspire without ever forgetting that
there was still more of value that can always be learned and practically applied to even the most successful business. Demings humble beginnings began in Sioux City, Iowa on October
14, 1900. The son of a country lawyer, Deming attended the University of Wyoming and the University of Colorado, and completed his doctorate in mathematical physics at Yale University
in 1927 (Petersen and Hodgetts 71). He would spend his summer college breaks working at the Hawthorne Works of the Western Electric Company in Cicero, Illinois (Petersen and Hodgetts
71). It was here where Deming would get a greater education than he ever received in any classroom. It involved a conversation regarding the uniform composition of the
telephone and the contributions of Dr. Walter A. Shewhart (Petersen and Hodgetts 71). Shewhart would become Demings friend and mentor, and his pupil would zealously embrace his business philosophy,
"Variation is the enemy of quality" (Petersen and Hodgetts 71). While working at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Deming began concentrating on quality control, while still working closely with
Dr. Shewhart (Petersen and Hodgetts 71). In 1939, Deming became chief mathematician and statistician at the U.S. Census Bureau, which enabled him to apply his theories about quality control
