Vygotsky developed a theory of social cognitive development. The theory can be seen as one that contrasts with the ideas of Piaget. The theory is a criticism on Piagets model, with the foundation of Vygotskys model arguing that culture is a key element in the way cognitive development takes place, where learning will lead to the process of cognitive development. In effect, the child learns through social interaction, rather than acting alone and through internal analysis as put forward on Piagets theory. Slide 3 Key to the process is the role of mediators which are culturally specific (Vygotsky, 1978). Two types of mediator exist; tools and signs. Tools are aspects such as language, which is highly influenced by cultural aspects, and mathematical processes, examples of signs are the written word and algebraic symbols. The ability to solve cognitive problems increases as the mediators develop. This process sees elementary mental functions develop into higher mental functions(Vygotsky, 1978). Examples of elementary mental functions include memory, attention use and span and perceptions. Higher mental functions include critical thinking skills, the ability to read and write and problem solving using tools (Vygotsky, 1978). Slide 4 The most important element of the process is the cultural aspects. The mediators will be specific to each culture, this can be seen in the way problem solving techniques develop aligned to those used in the culture that the child is growing up in (Vygotsky, 1978).
