of his works can be seen as a parallel to reality, and this is especially true of this novel in the context of the international relations theory put forth by
Albert Hirschman in "Exit, Voice, and Loyalty". This paragraph helps the student present a summary of the novel, Vulcans Hammer. Vulcans Hammer employs
some of Dicks most common themes including war and conflict (Dick, 2004). Vulcans Hammer was penned in 1960 when the world stage was poised for great political and cultural upheaval.
By the year 2029 the world is controlled by Unity, an organization that assumed control after a devastating world war. Unity is able to control all aspect of life by
using a set of artificial intelligences. These AI systems were deemed Vulcan 2 and Vulcan 3. Unity has such a tight grip over the population of the world that all
parts of their lives are monitored no matter the age or social position. An oppositional force has risen up against Unity and the Vulcans tyrannical power calling themselves The Healers.
The Healers seek to overthrow the Vulcans and Unity to restore freedom. Unlike most of the world, the healers have chosen to voice their displeasure with the current political situation
(Hirschman, 1970). In proper Phillip K. Dick style, The Healers were actually set up by Vulcan 2. Fearing that the Vulcan 3 might plan to overthrow it, Vulcan 2 organized
