motivation is a process of making choices based on the alternatives available and the persons perception of which choice will maximize their pleasure or minimize their pain. Vroom and later,
Edward Lawler and Lyman Porter, thought that the relationship between how a person behaves at work and their goals was not as simple as others suggested. Instead, Vroom thought that
other factors such as personality, experience, skills and so on played a core role in any persons behavior at work. There are three factors in Vrooms expectancy theory: valence,
instrumentality and expectancy: 1. Valence refers to en emotional orientation that a person holds related to the perceived outcomes or rewards of behaviors. It has to do with intrinsic and
extrinsic rewards, i.e., how much a person really wants the intrinsic reward which could be their satisfaction with a job well done and how much they want the extrinsic reward,
such as money, benefits, time-off and so on. Each person holds one or the other in higher regard and the manager must learn which types of rewards an employee values
