the notion of integrity, honor, and the ideals of chivalry as it involved knights. It is an epic story of one mans journey to discover his own weaknesses, and how
his vows and oaths were of the utmost importance in terms of his worth as a human being and a knight. The following paper first examines the idea of vows
and oaths seen in the classic tale of Gawain and the Green Knight, and then examines such integrity today, focusing on how people are too quick to ignore the importance
of vows and oaths especially in relationship to marriages. Vow and Oaths in Gawain and the Green Knight "King Authurs court is in the midst of a celebration
that has taken place for fifteen days...in the middle of their celebration, the Green Knight and his green horse come barging into the hall" (Sir Gawain and the Green Knight).
The Green Knight wants someone to have a joust with him and the only person who stands up to this challenge is Gawain, the youngest of the knights. Gawain is
successful but the rule is that he must now visit the Green Knight one year later so that the Green Knight can impart an equal attack upon Gawain.
This is the beginning of his journey in terms of the importance of vows and oaths. Gawain will do as he is told
because he has made an oath to his king and to his own knighthood and will not go back on his word, or that which is expected of him despite
